Baby teeth do real work. They chew, they shape speech, and they hold the space a permanent tooth will need years from now. When decay or a fracture takes out too much of a baby tooth, a filling has nothing solid to hold onto — it would crack or fall out under normal chewing. A crown solves that by covering the whole tooth, so your child keeps using it comfortably until it’s ready to fall out on its own. Pulling the tooth instead might sound simpler, but an empty space too early can let nearby teeth drift and crowd the permanent tooth trying to come in. That’s why saving a fixable baby tooth is usually worth it.
A crown is usually the right call when a cavity is too large for a filling, a tooth has fractured, enamel didn't form properly in the first place, or a tooth has been treated for deep decay and needs full protection afterward. Kids with a history of heavy decay sometimes do better with crowns too, because a crown seals the whole tooth rather than one surface. It's not the answer to everything, though. Small and medium cavities usually just need a filling, and some early decay can be stopped without any drilling at all using silver diamine fluoride. We start with a careful exam and, when needed, digital X-rays — which use up to 90% less radiation than old-style film — and then walk you through what we found and why.
Most pediatric crowns fall into two families, and each has a job it does best.

What To ExpectHere's the usual shape of the appointment. First, we numb the tooth — our SOAN cordless system delivers the anesthetic slowly and gently, which takes a lot of the sting out of the part kids dread most. Once your child is comfortable, Dr. Brock removes the decay, shapes the tooth so the crown can seat properly, and fits and cements the crown in place. You're with your child through all of it.
The number of visits depends on the crown type, and we'll tell you before you book anything. For kids who are anxious or need longer treatment, we offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation — sedation is its own conversation, and we'll have it with you openly if it's on the table.

Once it's decided that a crown is necessary, the tooth will be prepared. This involves removing any decay and shaping the tooth to fit the crown snugly. For children, this step is crucial as it ensures the crown will not only fit well but also function correctly.

Crown Placement
After the tooth is prepared, the crown is placed over it. If a stainless steel crown is used, it can often be fitted in a single visit. However, for tooth-colored crowns, an impression may be taken, and a temporary crown placed while the permanent one is custom-made.

Final Adjustments
Once the permanent crown is ready, it is cemented into place. Dr. Brock will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and comfortable bite.
